Daal is a persian word meaning half piece. Kali is not a daal as it is available as 'whole' (sabut) piece. The correct term is sabut masoor. I would like to add my personal preferrences 1)Add a little bit 'laal daal' or laal massor to make it a bit thin/liquid like. At the end use a hand/electric beater to have a smooth consistency.
